Professor Derek Paley

 

Dr. Derek A. Paley, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering, has been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. This grade is awarded to AIAA members who have demonstrated a successful practice in the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics.

Professor Paley will be honored at the AIAA Foundation Associate Fellows Dinner in conjunction with the 49th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, where he will be presented with his Associate Fellow pin and certificate. The dinner will be held on Tuesday, 4 January 2011 in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Paley is in his fourth year on the aerospace engineering faculty at the University of Maryland, where he is the founding director of the Collective Dynamics and Control Laboratory. Paley received the PhD degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 2007 and the BS degree in Applied Physics from Yale University in 1997. He received a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award in 2010. Paley's research is on collective behavior in natural and artificial systems, with special emphasis on motion planning for autonomous vehicles. This work is supported by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense, and has applications in environmental monitoring, homeland security and national defense.
